Artswork - Strong Voices

Local community partners

The Strong Voices programme is part of a national initiative that aims to address some of the social, cultural and economix barriers that prevent children & young people engaging with arts, culture and heritage. In Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant the programme connects young people with arts and culture by working with key organisations and groups that support some of the most disadvantaged children and young people in the region to create new opportunities and delivery partnerships with arts & cultural organisations. Young people’s interests, ambitions and needs are central to delivering this work and the programme ethos is one of collaborative engagement with children & young people to support them as they discover, develop and explore new insights, skills, talents and creativity.

The Strong Voices programme was a two-year project that came to an end in March 2015.

During the months of January to March 2015, in partnership with The Strong Voices programme Music in Detention opened up a dialogue between a group of young people at The Harbour School, Cosham and detainees being held at Haslar Immigration Removal Centre. Over 14 workshops the participants worked collaboratively, via artist Simon Paylor, to produce Strong Voices – The Harbour Sessions, that features six original tracks of music created by the students and detainees.
