Bedford Creative Arts

Local community partners

Bedford Creative Arts, is a contemporary arts organisation that has worked across Bedfordshire for 30 years. We are committed to commissioning quality art working with local communities. We make work with people and in response to places. Art made in public and community spaces by artists and musicians who actively encourage participation in their work.

We consider the immigrants in Yarl's Wood to be a part of our community. Bedford Music In Detention (MID) brings immigration detainees at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre together with local community members and professional musicians in Bedford to share, create and enjoy music, enabling often ignored voices to be heard in new ways. As well as regular participatory music workshops at Yarl’s Wood IRC we run Community Exchange projects during which our musicians facilitate the creation and sharing of songs, ideas, experiences, lyrics and instrumental tracks by going back and forth between community participants and detainees, enabling all participants to get involved in the creative process.  Linking schools and community groups with detainees at Yarl’s Wood IRC encourages participants from diverse backgrounds to think about their shared humanity and the way they think about people who are perceived to be “different”.
