Local community partners

Porchlight is a charity based in Kent supporting local homeless and vulnerable members of the community. Porchlight provide safe and secure accommodation with hostels in Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Ramsgate, Sittingbourne and Tonbridge, they also run a homelessness prevention service and have a dedicated rough sleeper team. Porchlight also provide services supporting people with complex needs, with specialist services for young people, ex-offenders and people with enduring mental health issues.

In the first two weeks of June 2015 Music in Detention ran a Community Exchange project at one of Porchlight’s hostels in Dover. The hostel accommodates homeless and vulnerable people from Dover and the surrounding area. The artists who facilitated this project carried messages, lyrics and music between the Porchlight participants and a group of detainees at Dover Immigration Removal Centre opening up new lines of communication between the two groups. For most of Porchlight’s participants this was the first time they had made and written music. The project resulted in the creation of 11 original tracks of music written and performed by members of the two groups. A selection of these tracks were also performed live by MID artists at Dover Market Square on 13th June 2015 as part of the launch event for the Refugee Tales walk. Artists were supported by the recorded voices of Porchlight participants and detainees at Dover IRC.
