Change – a parade with a difference

In November and December 2008, MID facilitated a community exchange project between detainees at Haslar IRC in Gosport and young people at the nearby Nimrod Community Centre on the Rowner estate.

The children were asked to express their ideas about the word ‘change’ through drawings and colours, with a view to using some of these ideas to design flags and a banner for a parade-style performance with dance, drum and percussion. Detainees at Haslar worked on a song about change that features lyrics in ten different languages! Detainees were also able to add their artwork to the banner before the grand finale performance at Nimrod on 12 December. The performance attracted the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Derek Kimber, who joined the drumming alongside the local beat police!

At one point there was no audience whatsoever – not because everyone had walked out but because they’d all got up to join in the music making!”

John Speyer, Director, MID

Change was a natural theme linking the two communities – the detainees have no idea what’s ahead of them and the young people are facing the redevelopment of their estate […] I really feel the young people and the detainees are connecting through the medium of the music and the flag and the banner – it’s a very simple idea, but it really works. It must help both groups feel less isolated and nervous of the future, and the kids have certainly learnt a lot about a group of people who live nearby whom they will never see.”

Jacky Charman, Nimrod Centre

“It’s been really fun. We have been learning to do different drums and wearing outfits that are really cool.”

Zyan Dean, aged nine, from Rowner

This project was facilitated by five artists from our music provider partner Drum Runners.
