Call for proposals: Evaluation

13th November 2017

Music In Detention has been taking music-making into immigration detention centres since 2005, and out again into the community since 2007.  We are the only organisation in the UK focused on arts provision in immigration detention, and have pioneered the use of music-making to connect detainees to excluded and stigmatised groups in the community, enabling them to create and exchange music and lyrics with each other and build empathy and solidarity.  We meet their urgent need for self-expression, bring them the joy of creativity and help them to find how much they have in common.

We are looking to engage an independent evaluator to lead our evaluation work and take it forward.  MID has always been committed to good quality evaluation, and has produced a series of substantial evaluation reports since 2005, most of them independent.  In 2013 we constructed a new evaluation framework and toolkit, which we have used to integrate evaluation activities into our delivery cycle.  Over the last few years we have collected a rich body of data about the impact of our work.  Now we also have a new six-year strategy which seeks to extend our social impact in detention centres and communities, and brings a much greater focus on artistic practice and quality.

So we are looking for an able and experienced evaluator to:

  • Produce a summative evaluation of our existing work, using the data we have collected and first-hand evaluation
  • Carry out a far-reaching review our evaluation framework and toolkit, to ensure they fit with the range of work envisaged in MID’s new strategy and reflect its new emphasis on artistic practice and quality
  • Support for the MID team as we start to operate the new toolkit and embed it into the delivery cycle

The successful applicant will also be able to demonstrate practical experience of evaluating social impact and artistic practice and quality, strategic and analytical insight, and incisive report-writing – as well as the ability to lead this vital segment of MID’s programme, work strategically, connect evaluation to other functions in the organisation and work closely with colleagues.

We have a budget of £6,000 for work up to the end of March; a further budget for April onwards is to be finalised and will be negotiated with the successful candidate.  We are a small charity on a tight budget, and value for money is a key consideration.  But we have no set number of days or day rate in mind and will assess proposals on their merits.

The deadline for proposals is 1.00pm on Friday 1st December.
