In the Spring and Autumn of 2015 Music In Detention ran two participatory music making projects connecting young people attending the YMCA's Fusion Cafe in Hayes with detainees being held at Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre just a few miles down the road. We were delighted to be invited to Y fest to perform with the young people who took part in our projects.

Supported by Music for Change musician Oliver Seager, the young people performed 'Keep On Fighting', one of the tracks written during the second project.

The track's title relates to the idea that you have to ‘keep on fighting’ even when faced with difficult circumstances. This was an idea that struck a chord with both the young people and immigration detainees involved in the project. Indeed this track started out life at Harmondsworth IRC with detainees coming up with the backing track during a jamming session. The track was then taken to the YMCA where artists worked with the young people on writing lyrics to go on top. After hearing the detainees’ stories, the young people found ways to empathise, give support, advise, and encourage detainees to stay strong. One brilliant piece of advice from a YMCA participant: “Life’s not about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
