Samba in the Sun

5th October 2011

We haven’t had many warm, sunny evenings this year, but August 8 proved to be just that! As part of MID Gosport’s community engagement programme, an outdoor evening event took place between detainees at Haslar IRC and samba drummers ‘Big Noise’. Community samba band ‘Big Noise’ are based in Gosport and play traditional Brazilian samba-reggae, adding their own twist to create a unique and infectious groove!

Once the band started playing it wasn’t long before detainees (and staff) were watching, listening and dancing. After the initial demonstration, the band handed out drums and other percussion instruments and invited the detainees to join in. All in all, 101 detainees attended the session.

We finished the evening with refreshments and general socialising. MID Gosport are keen to repeat this event next summer and will invite other local Gosport music groups to visit the Centre.
