The Challenge meets Harmondsworth and the project lives on!

24th January 2013

In the run up to October half term last year a group of young people were inspired by the stories they had heard about people's experiences of detention to sign up for a week long intensive music making project, running in tandem with sessions at Harmondsworth detention centre. The young people created their own musical compositions showing empathy and support for the men detained there. In response participants in the centre composed music which carried important messages for young people in the UK today.

Prior to the project the young people had the opportunity to speak at length with a former detainee who had spent 18 months at   Dover IRC. After this they went on a sponsored walk in funny costumes and raised a fantastic £138 towards the cost of MID's music making programmes!

The group also talked about the project at an event for local charities hosted by BAA Airports, they were so impressive that a member of the group was offered a place on the Small Grants Panel of the Heathrow Community Fund. The young people will also be interviewed by Hayes FM sometime soon!

Programme manager Sebastian said: The Challenge's mission is to 'build stronger local communities' and to connect local people though common projects. Working alongside Music in Detention we were able to introduce a group of our young people to some of the most isolated people in their local community. Many of our young people came on this project to simply make music, but by the end of the week felt a real empathy with those in detention and a real desire to change things. I would like to thank the group at Harmondsworth and Music in Detention for making this fantastic project a reality."

Regimes manager Karen at Harmondsworth said of the project "Music is a common language that transcends age, nationality, and, through Community Exchange, detention. Within that creative moment all is equal and the men and staff at Harmondsworth would like to thank the youth involved in 'The Challenge' for all their hard work and commitment in this project."

The project was facilitated by Shammi and Michael from Asian Music Circuit, scroll down to listen to some of the music!
