Gigh and Assma – ‘Nationality?’
Interview
In December 2011, musicians led by Camilo Tirado visited Beauchamp Middle School and Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre over the course of 3 weeks. The aim of the project was to create a connection between detainees and pupils. Although the two groups could never physically meet, the artists helped them get to know each other by writing, singing and playing through the medium of sound recording. Get to know them a little yourself and have a listen to this CD.
Thie project was delivered by the Asian Music Circuit (www.amc.org.uk), and led by Camilo Tirado.
Music In Detention works through music to give a voice to immigration detainees and create channels of communication between them, immigration detention staff, local communities and the wider public.
"I loved our performances and learning about people from this country and other countries. I would love to do it again!"
Laura Wells, Year 5
"A big thanks goes out to the artists and to all the staff and participants involved at Beauchamp Middle School and Yarl's Wood IRC for their wonderful enthusiasm, energy and engagement with the project."
Jasel Nandha, Asian Music Circuit
