Seafield & Haslar

The recordings on this CD are the culmination of a Community Exchange Project between detainees at Haslar Immigration Removal Centre and participants at Seafield Community House in Gosport. The project took place in January and March 2009.

A community facility for local children on the Seafield Estate in Gosport, Seafield Community House provides a base for a range of activities and services including homework clubs, after school clubs, and holiday activities for you people. This project was felt to be a very special opportunity for Seafield Community House young people.

IRC Haslar are pleased to be working alongside Music In Detention to be able to provide an expressive and creative outlet for the immigration detainees in their care. They embrace the cultural diversity of their detainee population and encourage detainees to celebrate their unique cultural identity and nationality through music, dance and song. Music In Detention workshops assist IRC Haslar in promoting respect for the many cultural differences between the nationalities and detainees and promotes positive interaction between staff and detainees.

This project was delivered by Drum Runners, facilitated by Solo Banton, Rocky Chessman and Lucky Moyo, on behalf of Music In Detention.

Music In Detention works through music to give voice to immigration detainees and create channels of communication between them, immigration detention staff, local communities and the wider public.

Tracks 1-8 recorded by detainees at IRC Haslar with Solo Banton and Lucky Moyo. Tracks 9 & 10 recorded with participants at Seafield Community House with Solo Banton and Rocky Chessman.

All tracks recorded and produced by Solo Banton and mixed with Kris Kemist at Reality Shock Studios who also provided additional guitar.

Special thanks go to all the detainees and participants who took part.

Additional thanks go to Simon Paylor, Rob George, Rachel Thompson and Marie-Claude Barker at IRC Haslar; David and Joan Wiltshire at Seafield Community House and to everyone who supported the workshops and the project.
