The Musician in Residence programme was created in response to requests from people in detention for more frequent music activities and help with music skills, and to intensify the impact music-making has on those who participate.
For seven months, Shammi Pithia from Music for Change. visited Harmondsworth IRC on the same day each week to lead two music-making workshops: ensemble music sessions in the afternoons and song-writing and music production in the evenings.
Weekly sessions enabled Shammi to establish deeper relationships with detainees and build layers of comfort and trust that can be hard to achieve in shorter term projects. The results were the writing and production of twenty-three high quality songs and three open performances for everyone in the centre.
